The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood
American author and illustrator Howard Pyle published his work The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire in 1883. Pyle structured the classic Robin Hood ballads into a sequential storyline. Pyle transformed the late Middle English of the ballads into a child-friendly vernacular for his characters' dialogue. The novel is remarkable for the fresh direction it gave to the Robin Hood mythos, which impacted many artists, authors, and filmmakers throughout the 20th century.
