North and South

Published anonymously in serial form in Household Words from 1854 to 1855, and in book form in 1855, North and South was written by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell at the request of Charles Dickens. George Eliot's novels about provincial life were influenced by this account of the disparity between the values of rural southern England and the industrial north because of their psychological complexity.
