Oedipus the King

Greek mythology describes Oedipus as the king of Thebes who unintentionally killed his father and wed his mother. Although Oedipus is said to have ruled Thebes up until his death, Homer claims that when the truth about their connection was out, his mother and wife committed themselves by hanging. There are noticeable distinctions in emphasis and detail in the post-Homeric tradition, which is best known for Sophocles' Oedipus Rex (or Oedipus the King) and Oedipus at Colonus.
