The landed gentry, the clergy, the manufacturers, the professionals, the farmers, and the workers are all analysed in this realist masterpiece set in the town of Middlemarch. The story centres on Dorothea Brooke and Tertius Lydgate, two idealistic personalities whose marriages end in tragedy.
