The original Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, was published all the way back in 1887. Other than the short stories, it is one of only four novels in which Conan Doyle has portrayed the famous detective. The magnifying glass is first used as a detective instrument in A Study in Scarlet, which makes it the first detective novel in the English language to do so.
