A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

James Joyce's autobiographical book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which was serialised in The Egoist from 1914 to 1916 and then published as a book in 1916, is often regarded as the best bildungsroman ever written in the English language. Stephen Dedalus, who later made a comeback as one of the key characters in James Joyce's Ulysses (1922), is shown in the novel during his formative years.
